Managing a School Assessment Calendar in SharePoint

I have been asked a number of times at a number of different IT functions,
“How do you manage your assessment calendar within SharePoint”. Unfortunately
when we adopted sharepoint in 2007, I understood that sharepoint could not
perform cross-site look-ups at the time. This may have changed for 2010. At
that time I bought a third party product called “Cross site lookup” from sharepointboost. http://www.sharepointboost.com/

Essentially each subject at the college has its own site, with a standard
assessment calendar template for that subject. SharePointboost product allows
me to aggregate each of those calendars into a single calendar, with different
views. See the attached screenshot. I am still able to perform all of the
sharepoint functions such as sorting and ordering, so this works well. Beware
if you are going to go down this track ensure that you have the template
perfect, and that your curriculum person is never going to change the list
definition.
